Online Reading Tutoring for Ages 5–14
NexEdu provides text-based reading practice using short passages and one A/B/C/D comprehension question at a time. Sessions are generated for the selected year group, Key Stage and topic, with hints after mistakes and a brief reteach after two consecutive incorrect answers.
NexEdu's reading lessons are text based. The service does not listen to a child read aloud and should not be presented as an assessment of oral reading fluency or pronunciation.
What NexEdu can practise in reading
- Understanding a short passage: each graded reading question can include a short passage before the A/B/C/D choices.
- Retrieval: identify information that is stated directly in a text.
- Inference: use evidence in the passage to decide what is implied.
- Vocabulary in context: consider what words and phrases mean within the passage.

Key Stage 1 · Years 1–2 · Ages 5–7
KS1 Reading
The English curriculum separates reading into word reading and comprehension. NexEdu's on-screen tutor is best suited to text-based understanding, vocabulary and simple comprehension practice; it does not replace systematic phonics teaching or a teacher hearing a child read.
Key Stage 2 · Years 3–6 · Ages 7–11
KS2 Reading
KS2 reading develops understanding across a wider range of fiction, poetry, plays and non-fiction. NexEdu can practise vocabulary, retrieval, inference, summarising and questions about language or organisation.
Key Stage 3 · Years 7–9 · Ages 11–14
KS3 Reading
At KS3, pupils are expected to understand increasingly challenging texts, make inferences with evidence, develop vocabulary and consider purpose, audience and context. NexEdu provides short-form practice around these skills.
How reading support is generated
The tutor is instructed to use UK spelling and age-appropriate language. Reading turns include a short passage before a single multiple-choice question, rather than asking the child to provide personal information or browse external websites.
- An incorrect answer receives a helpful hint before the next question.
- Two consecutive incorrect answers trigger a short reteach.
- The tutor is instructed not to repeat previous questions within the session.
- Same-day lesson state can be restored for an unfinished selected topic.
Curriculum reference
The Department for Education English programme states that reading at KS1 and KS2 includes both word reading and comprehension, and that KS3 develops independent reading and understanding of increasingly challenging texts.
